Timothy Gage TIMOTHY GAGE, Director, is a Professor of Anthropology and Epidemiology. Dr. Gage's teaching and research interests include population dynamics, human-environmental interactions and population genetics. His recent research involves the development of multilevel mixture models to analyze racial and ethnic variation in infant mortality. He received the 2002 Gabriel W. Lasker Award for the published results of his research on human biology. He was elected President of the American Association of Anthropological Genetics(1999-2000). He has also served on the executive committee of the American Antropological Association(1991-1993). Recently, Dr Gage received the Excellence in Research Award from the University at Albany.

Nancy A. Denton NANCY A. DENTON, Associate Director, is a Professor of Sociology. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Demography from the University of Pennsylvania. Her primary research interests are in the areas of race/ethnicity and residential segregation and her current project examines the neighborhood contexts of children by race/ethnicity/immigrant generation. Her book with Douglas Massey, American Apartheid, won several awards, including the Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Award of the American Sociological Association. She has been elected President of the Eastern Sociological Society for 2005-06.

Shawn Bushway SHAWN BUSHWAY, Director of the Computing/Data Services Core, is an Associate Professor in the School of Criminal Justice. He received his Ph.D. in Public Policy Analysis and Political Economy from the Carnegie Mellon University. He is a criminologist with a background in public policy, statistics, and economics. Dr. Bushway's research interests are in the area of desistance from crime and the sentencing process. His recent research focuses on: (1) developing methods to study factors affecting desistance, (2) examining the impact of a criminal history record, and (3) examining the efficacy of crime prevention programs. Currently, he is studying the impact of incarceration on offending over the life course. Dr. Bushway currently serves on the editorial board of Criminology, Journal of Experimental Criminology, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, and Criminology & Public Policy.

Samantha Friedman SAMANTHA FRIEDMAN, Director of the Public Infrastructure Core, is an Associate Professor of Sociology. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology and Demography from Pennsylvania State University. Her research interests span urban sociology, immigration, and housing. Her recent research examines the role played by urbanization in influencing overweight and obesity in the developing world. She is also currently studying the extent to which racial and ethnic minorities encounter discriminatory housing practices when renting or purchasing a home. Dr. Friedman is currently serving as advisory editor for the journal Social Problems.
