Professor Shaw is an Associate Professor in the Health Policy, Management, and Behavior department of the School of Public Health.  He conducts population-based research on health behaviors in aging societies.  He currently has an R01 from the NIH that focuses on describing and predicting changes in health behaviors  - such as physical activity, diet, smoking, and alcohol use – during later life within the US and Japanese populations.  Dr. Shaw’s research also examines the social and psychological contexts surrounding these individual behaviors, as well as the health consequences of various combinations of these behaviors.  Much of Dr. Shaw’s work is guided by a life course perspective, by examining the potential role of early life events and conditions in shaping later life health.

Dr. Shaw is currently the Chair of the Health Policy, Management, and Behavior department, and was the Director of the Social Behavior and Community Health track from 2007-2011.  He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, and the Journal of Aging and Health.  He has served as an ad hoc reviewer for the Social Psychology and Interpersonal Processes (SPIP) study section of the NIH, and has served as a Special Emphasis Panel reviewer.  Dr. Shaw recently returned from Stockholm, Sweden, where he was a guest research for 6 months at the Karolinska Institute’s Aging Research Center.
